English Paper Piecing Zipper Bag
Completed: February 2025
Pattern: Quilted Zipper Bag by Christina Cameli (craftsy.com)
Size: 9.5" x 6" x 2.5"
Fabric: Rustic Weave by Moda for background and lining plus scraps
Techniques: English paper piecing (first completed EPP project!)
Notes: Glue-basted fabric onto 1 inch Yosine hexagon papers. Began sewing hexagons by hand and then switched to machine sewing because of hand fatigue/pain. Followed machine-piecing video by Cotton and Chocolate and used Superior Mono-Poly clear thread on top with a horizontal spool and a mesh-jacket cover. Used Aurafil 2-ply 50 weight cotton thread in the bobbin. Moved the pressure foot up to thread Mono-Poly into the machine and moved the pressure foot down to thread the 70/10 Microtex needle. Used a woven-light setting and leader fabric to chain piece hexies with a zig zag stitch length of 2.0 and width of 1.5. Made a total of 80 hexagons and 16 half hexies to construct two panels that measured 8.75” tall (5 hexies) by 12” wide (8 hexies). Cut panels down to 7.5” by 10.25’ and used a 9” metal zipper. Instead of using fusible interfacing, quilted panels onto batting using “stitch in the ditch” technique. Sewing through all of the thicknesses near the zipper broke a machine needle; completed project using a Jeans 90/14 needle.
